INTRODUCTION

Diabetes refers to a group of diseases characterised by hyperglycaemia that results when body does not produce any or enough insulin and insulin is not working properly. There are mainly two types of diabetes. In Type 1 Diabetes, body does not produce any insulin & patient requires insulin lifelong. In Type 2 Diabetes, there is defect in insulin action initially, but later on there is relative insulin deficiency. In addition to acute complications, chronic hyperglycaemia can damage multiple organs.

Prevalence of Diabetes & its complications in Southern Punjab

Everyone in Punjab needs to understand the seriousness of diabetes and its complications because of high susceptibility to this disease. Preliminary study shows high prevalence of diabetes and its complications in population of Southern Punjab. It can be attributed to genetic susceptibility, environmental influences and lack of awareness about this disease.

Lack of Comprehensive Diabetes Care Centre

It has been seen that number of patients with diabetes in southern Punjab is increasing year by year. The morbidity and mortality associated with this disease leads to increased economic and financial burden on patients, their families and society. There are certain barriers for early diagnosis and proper treatment of this disease. So there was a need of a comprehensive diabetes care centre which should take care of all aspects of diabetes care under one roof. Hence MAX Diabetes Care Centre was started in Southern Punjab two years back at MAX Super Speciality Hospital, Bathinda. This centre has been upgraded to a 360° comprehensive & advanced.

Future Plans

Preliminary data shows high prevalence of Type 2 DM and related complications in population of Southern Punjab than in population of other states. So, we are carrying out research and other preventive strategies for reducing the incidence and prevalence of Diabetes and its complications in Southern Punjab. By promoting the importance of lifestyle changes through education and awareness we can prevent and reduce the burden of diabetes and its complications in Punjab and save many lives.

Awareness camps and workshops on Diabetes, Obesity and Thyroid are being carrying out in both rural and urban areas about preventing diabetes with proven effectiveness of lifestyle changes and advances in treatment. People will become aware and convinced with the seriousness of the disease.
